A solar prominence is a plasma structure supported by the Sun's magnetic field, anchored in the photosphere and looping out into the corona. Prominences are also known as filaments when viewed against the solar disk. During a total solar eclipse, prominences are sometimes visible to the naked eye at the moment of totality. There is still much to discover about the processes by which prominences are formed.
