Workshop Report Event PUBLISHED Dec 16, 2024 This workshop is supported by the NASA Chief Science Data Office, emphasizing the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for science. It focuses on exploring and applying foundation models (FMs) in science. Building on the momentum generated by recent results of FMs, we aim to delve deeper into how these powerful AI advances can be specifically harnessed within various scientific disciplines. The workshop brings together domain scientists, computer scientists, AI experts, and other professionals to address following challenges in AI for science:Challenge 1: Which scientific problems should be targeted for AI, especially foundation models?Challenge 2: Considering the complex nature of scientific research and the capabilities of foundation models, what are the essential collaborative strategies and resources required for developing and applying foundation models for science?Challenge 3: What are the best practices and insights for effectively tuning foundation models for science application, research process, and operational efficiency?Expected OutcomesComprehensive overview of AI advancements in NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD)Identification of existing challengesSkill enhancement in utilizing foundation models for scienceFostering stronger AI-Science community networksIdentifying promising new areas for research that offer high potential returnsFacilitating future research and collaboration projectsWorkshop ReportRead the workshop report (PDF, 390KB)RecordingsView the event program.Day 1 RecordingDay 2 RecordingDay 3 RecordingOrganizing Committee from each NASA CenterManil Maskey (MSFC/HQ/CSDO)Mark Carroll (GSFC)Dan Crichton (JPL)Suman Sinha Ray (GRC)Ed McLarney (LaRC/HQ)Nikunj Oza (ARC)Kenton Fisher (JSC)Elizabeth Fancher (MSFC)Steering CommitteeRahul Ramachandran (Earth Science/Data Science)Sylvain Costes (Biological and Physical Science)Daniel Duffy (High-End Computing)Megan Ansdell (Planetary Science)Madhulika Guhathakurta (Heliophysics)Roopesh Ojha (Astrophysics)Sanaz Vahidinia (Astrophysics)Code of ConductThis meeting will be held following the Transform to Open Science Code of Conduct.
